居酒屋 MATSUKAME
Located in Mibutsuji-cho, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, Matsukame serves a 9-variety platter of sashimi, small cooked plates, and tempura, alongside hamo and scallop tempura and local sake.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Situated in Mibutsuji-cho in Kyoto's Nakagyo Ward, Matsukame offers a relaxed setting for small plates, fresh sashimi, and tempura. A popular choice, especially among solo diners, is the recommended 9-variety platter, which brings together 3 cuts of sashimi, 3 daily side dishes, and 3 fried items or tempura onto a single plate. Designed to let diners sample a little bit of everything over a drink, it often serves as the natural first order of the evening.
Tempura features prominently on the menu, showcasing fresh seafood and seasonal produce. Well-regarded selections include tender daggertooth pike conger (hamo)—a Kyoto staple—and thick sea scallops wrapped with fragrant shiso leaf before frying. Vegetables also get their turn in the fryer, from plump mizunasu eggplants to mild Manganji peppers, all served piping hot.
Beyond fried dishes, the kitchen offers an enticing lineup of seafood, such as sashimi featuring Pacific bluefin tuna and red sea bream, carefully cleaned cod milt dressed in ponzu, and lightly seared oysters. Diners can pair these dishes with a tasting flight of regional sake, a draft beer, or a refreshing citrus chuhai made with freshly squeezed sudachi.
Seating includes both counter spots and standard tables, making the dining room equally accommodating for casual solo dinners and small gatherings. Matsukame is open during the evening hours, and reservations are accepted.
